Every so often I am startled awake by a ruckus near the back door of the Adoption Center here at the Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society. In my sleepy delirium, I immediately think: A burglar! Santa Claus! The sky is falling!

Then I shake off the sleep and realize it’s just another batch of “Dixie Dogs” arriving from their long journey.

In addition to serving local dogs here in our community, Dakin has spent the past several years working with outside organizations to find homes for dogs coming from overpopulated areas in the southern United States. In partnership with Operation Pets Alive, our most recent Dixie Dog group arrived on April 7, 2012, from Montgomery County, Texas.

My friend put together this video about the most recent Dixie Dog transfer.

I often get to meet the Dixie Dogs after they are cleared to go up for adoption. This most recent group is pretty swell. If you’re looking for a small- to medium-sized dog, you should get here quick! Although they’ve often spent weeks or months waiting for new homes in Texas, the Dixie Dogs are usually adopted in less than a week here in Massachusetts.

Thanks for listening! Maybe I will see some of you soon when you come to find your new canine friend. Now back to that nap…
